RAJA MUDA OF SELANGOR LAUNCHES MALAYSIA EXPO 2017 YOUTH CONTEST
Winners to join Malaysian delegation in Astana, Kazakhstan, to be part of initiative to encourage nations to create a green future with Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR – DYTM, Tengku Amir Shah ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Raja Muda of Selangor today launched the Malaysia EXPO 2017 Youth Contest, as Malaysia builds up to its participation at the World EXPO that will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan from June 10 to September 10, 2017.
“The world has entered a new age, the age of renewable energy” said Ir. Ahmad Hadri Haris, Chief Executive Officer of Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (Greentech Malaysia). “We want the youth of Malaysia, and subsequently the youth of the world, to care about Future Energy and create a positive impact towards climate change mitigation and the impact of Future Energy.”
Led by Greentech Malaysia, on behalf of the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA), Malaysia will have a pavilion at the world’s oldest EXPO. Themed “Future Energy”, EXPO 2017 aims to create a global debate between countries, nongovernmental organisations, companies and the general public on the crucial question: "how do we ensure safe and sustainable access to energy for all while reducing CO2 emissions?”
“Malaysia’s mission at EXPO 2017 is to be a leading voice to generate debate and raise awareness regarding the decisive impact that energy management has on the lives of people and our planet” Ir. Ahmad Hadri said. “We want the world to know they can create a green future with Malaysia as green growth is in our nature.”
He explained that Malaysia has transformed itself over the last 40 years and is today, an emerging market leader and ranked amongst the Top 25 most competitive nations in the world. This places Malaysia in a very strategic position, as beyond those key acknowledgements, it is also the Most Forested Emerging Market among the world’s Top 100 Nations, according to the Word Bank.
Ir. Ahmad Hadri said that the concept of future and renewable energy is not a novel idea and should not be seen as a practice only for developed nations. It should be seen as a necessity to ensure sustainability for the next generation.
“We believe, as an emerging market leader, Malaysia can drive positive change towards future energy” he said, adding that it cannot be just encouraged by a select number of individuals, but it needs a generational mindset shift. It is with that purpose that the Malaysian EXPO 2017 Youth contest was conceived to encourage the youth of Malaysia, and subsequently the youth of the world, to care about Future Energy and create a positive impact towards climate change mitigation and the impact of Future Energy.
The Malaysian EXPO 2017 Youth Contest is looking for young Malaysians to inspire the world. The #GreenGrowthGuru competition is searching for young Malaysians who would research and strategise how Malaysia can showcase to the world its green growth leadership. The individuals that inspire the most and show their willingness to propagate Malaysia’s Green Growth agenda will have an all-expenses-paid internship opportunity, to be part of the Malaysian delegation to EXPO 2017 to Astana, and present their research to an audience of big business minds. These individuals will have the chance to work with Greentech Malaysia, during their preparation here in Malaysia, and ultimately in Astana.
Alternatively the youths of Malaysia can be an inspiration to their peers and the rest of the country by helping to create a butterfly effect for green growth. Contestants are asked to post a Green Growth Inspiration on social media, with the hashtag #MyButterflyEffect, to raise awareness on how simple initiatives that we can all practice can collectively impact the future positively. The most innovative post will win tickets and accommodation for a one week stay in Astana, to visit EXPO 2017 and the Malaysian Pavilion.
